About The Kinetic Interface
The Kinetic Interface blog on Great Dance starts with the premise that by focusing on the body and movement we can better understand, engage with, and contribute to many of the technological and scientific changes that are reshaping our daily lives.
The goals of
The Kinetic Interface blog are to:
1) Highlight the valuable creative and artistic contributions that choreographers and dancers can make to body-based and movement-based developments currently taking place in a broad range of scientific and technological disciplines (
see 16 video examples). Choreographers and dancers are kinetic designers whose expertise and knowledge includes:
- Rapid prototyping of movement-based and gesture-based vocabularies
- Multiple approaches to creativity and movement generation
- An artistic and design sensibility for developing intuitive, memorable and appealing body-based interfaces for different environments
- Extensive knowledge about the body and its connection to emotional and physiological states, and
- Deep understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the body and movement over short and long-term durations
2) Bring dance to new audiences, especially those whose work, art and passions revolve around exploring how the body moves, interacts with and responds to new digital interfaces, responsive environments, and interactive objects and materials.
3) Foster interdisciplinary conversations that bring together dancers and other artists with experts and practitioners in a broad range of fields including science and technology, medicine and wellbeing, fashion and design, gaming and entertainment, architecture, environment and sustainability, and other disciplines.
4) Create new business models and revenue streams for choreographers and dancers that supports their work in live-performance settings and through Internet-based videos. These expanded business programs will be in the form of commissions, competitions, sponsorship, consulting and education.
