Reducing Injuries for Irish and Ballet Dancers in Motion Capture Lab

Since 2007, The Design and Ergonomics Research Group at Coventry University have used their motion capture lab to study the biomechanics of Irish and ballet dancers. The goal of this research is to understand the forces that act against the bodies of dancers so that dance injuries can be reduced.

From press release "Academics Announce New Approach to Reducing Injury in Dancers":

One particular Irish dance step called 'the rock' has been shown to exert a force of over 4 times the dancer's body weight on the ankles. Combined with the fact that some muscles during this move can be dealing with forces up to 6 times their maximum load it is easy to see why injuries are so common.
