Ryan Tracy Bio
Ryan Tracy is a performer, composer, and writer. He holds a
Masters Degree in Composition from the Mannes College of Music and BM degrees
in Composition and Choral Conducting from Chapman University.
Ryan has appeared in performance in New
York at venues such as The Whitney Musuem of American Art, Dance
Theater Workshop, P.S. 122, The Abrons Arts Center, Dixon Place, La MaMa, etc., Danspace, The
Ohio Theater, The Sara Meltzer Gallery, Galapagos, Monkey
Town, Secret Project Robot, OMI International
Arts Center,
Mannes College of Music, and Cornell
University. He has also
performed at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles,
and the Southern California Performing Art Center in Costa Mesa.
As a composer, Ryan's focus is in chamber music and opera.
In 2005, he founded Collective Opera Company (COC), a multi-disciplinary
network of performance and visual artists comprised of composers, vocalists,
actors, dancers, choreographers, set designers, and filmmakers. COC is
dedicated to creating original opera works with an emphasis in physical
performance, which has led to collaborations with the New York based choreographers Jonah Bokaer
and Elke Rindfleisch. Additionally, COC has been featured in the works of
Moving Theater and Magnetic Laboratorium. Ryan is currently developing the
evening length solo piano improvisation, SHAPE/SHAME.
In 2006, Ryan was a featured guest at Brooklyn College
on a panel discussion on how to bring opera to non-opera-going audiences.
As a writer, Ryan has published arts criticism and poetry both
in print and online. From 1999-2000, Ryan was wrote music criticism for The Orange County Register. He has also
published writing on culturebot.org and culturevulture.net. Since 2005, he has
been the lead essayist for Chez Bushwick. In May of 2007, Ryan founded
CounterCritic.com, a website that provides an alternative resource for arts
criticism and a forum for response to mainstream critics.
Ryan has fulfilled residencies at the Corporation of Yaddo
and The Edward Albee Foundation.
