Generating Movement Vs. Crafting Movement

Last Friday, the last day of an intensive week of rehearsals for Funny Uncles, I sat down with choreographer Peter DiMuro to discuss his approach to creating movement.

Click this link to listen to audio interview with Peter DiMuro.

I especially enjoyed this interview because Peter delved into the different phases of how he and Liz Lerman Dance Exchange goe about the choreographic process.

During the past week of rehearsals, the primary focus was on working with dancers to generate movement and create the movement vocabulary for this piece. As Peter explains, the initial movements come from the dancers themselves through exercises, experimentation and collaboration. During the next round of rehearsals in November, the focus will be on crafting the actual movement for upcoming performances in December.
