How Do Social Networking Pages Help Dancers?

By Doug Fox

How does having a social networking page on sites like MySpace and Facebook help dancers and dance companies in practical terms?

For example, does having a lot of friends on MySpace mean more people will come to your performances, make donations or support you in other ways?

What are examples of dance companies that have successfully used social networking sites?

I think event invitations on places like Myspace and Facebook start out as simply an extra way to put an invite out to your friends. But then, as more people show publicly that they are going to the event, more people who may not originally be a "friend" of the invitee become interested in going.

On the other hand, from some organizers, sending out additional invitations on social networks just feels like spam.

How does one draw the line?
