Bravo Launches "Step it Up" Reality Dance Competition

It's about time that Bravo TV jumps into the dance world and creates a reality show for dancers.

Bravo is about to roll-out "Step It Up" and the audition information is posted here. You can read a news story about this upcoming dance show.

Personally, I cannot stand watching Dancing with the Stars or So You Think You Can Dance. And if there's any chance a good quality, engaging reality competition can be created for dance, I think that Bravo TV has the best opportunity to pull it off. While their reality shows like Top Chef and Project Runway are pretty formulaic, they still strike me as engaging. With their "Step It Up" series, hopefully they'll get some good choreographers and dancers and create a framework in which some interesting, innovative and entertaining dance can be created.

Here's a post I wrote last year about the type of dance competition that Bravo TV might create, which is based on a post from early dance blogger, Rachel Feinerman.

From the article you cited: "Dancers competing against one another..."

You know, maybe this is the problem. Is this the *only* way that Americans can stomach seeing dance on television?

I agree, Eva. Why does it have to be a competition? I guess that's what the American sports-obsessed public can best relate to...

Also, I wish network TV was better. I'm glad Bravo's doing something but with all the money I spend on dance already, I can't afford cable!

I'm really happy this is happening. Even if it is not something I can stand to watch, I'm happy that dance is getting air time and eyeballs are watching. We have to start somewhere!

Not sure what Doug has against So You Think You Can Dance (currently, in my humble opinion, the best reality show for dance on TV) but to each their own. I'm looking forward to Bravo's knock off which I'm sure will have excellent production values and hopefully will turn out better than other, lesser, dance reality shows (MTV's Dancelife, ABC's Dance War).

Beto,

Maybe I should spend more time watching the TV dance shows - especially now that more are about to be broadcast. I probably won't get a chance to watch them on TV so I'll see if I can find clips or entire shows online.

Doug,

A lot of the shows do find their way online via the torrent system. In fact, every episode of So You Think You Can Dance is available this way and I've recently started grabbing, and watching, the Australian version that started up last week. It takes a little bit of time to download but it's worth it. And, in my opinion, easier to watch and get into than, say, ABC's Dance War.

You can find a ton of YouTube clips from SYTYCD, and the current Aussie version listed on the dance blog mentioned below.

Have a good week,
