Open Thread: Write About Your Dance Blog

It's been over a year since my last post that asked dance bloggers to write about their blogs.

So I thought since there are more dance bloggers and we've been talking about dance, blogging and community, it was a good time to create an updated thread where dance bloggers could write about their blogs.

If you have a dance blog (or touch upon dance topics in your blog), I encourage you to post a comment below. In your comment, please write about the focus of your blog, what topics you cover, what your connection is to dance and any other related subjects you'd like to discuss.

Thanks!!!

My blog is about whatever I feel like writing about. Since I'm a dancer, I often feel like writing about dance. I write my experiences as a dance performer, dance teacher, model, and martial artist. I post insights into muscular isolation, links on dance (and a whole host of non-dance things, too). I break down technique to educate new dancers, and discuss the pros and cons of working in a variety of venues.

And sometimes I just write silly things, too.

My blog is the desire to enter into the broader discussion of dance that takes place on the Internet.
It is also a place to post some of my current activities as a designer and educator.

My blog is my way of understanding what I am doing and at the same time have a conversation with other people about ideas that relate to dance, theatre and design. Beside rambling about those subjects, I will share my experiences with inFluxdance company. inFluxdance is a contemporary dance theatre collective comprised of artists interested in exploring and creating accessible works without boundaries.

The Imp's blog exists because dance, from our perspective, is a little too self important for its own good and could stand to be taken down a step or two!

My name is Michael Perez, but everyone calls me Miguelito. I'm a full-time flamenco guitarist based in Washington DC, USA. I perform with flamenco dancers several nights a week. My blog is a self-published account of my day-to-day life. It's meant to be educational and inspirational for my readers and therapeutic for myself--a way of reflecting on each day and recounting the good and not-so-good parts and how I can learn from them and grow. Happy reading!

My blog is a tool for me to chart my own progress as a dancer, and connect to other blogging dancers.

I saw a lot of great message-board discussion among belly dance teachers on the web, and I thought it would be interesting to put out there a chronicle of learning from the student perspective.

I have a dance section in my blog where I post photos and videos and small writeups on various ballroom dance related events in New York City that I attend.

Also I have dedicated blogs for the popular TV show Dancing With The Stars as well as the British original show Strictly Come Dancing which was the inspiration to Dancing With The Stars and also the Polish version Taniec z gwiazdami. For each I collect videos from the weekly shows, scores, song names as well as interviews with the contestants.

Dancehunter came into being because someone asked me what I do and I replied, "I'm a dancehunter." I figure a dancehunter needs a blog for when she's not busy hunting dance. I use it to reprint pieces that have no web archive and I do some original pieces, less and less though. Dancehuntin' is a busy job. I like doing interviews and no one wants to publish those these days. It's also a home for venueless pieces. I don't much blab on my blog; I blab enough in person. I hope to make Dancehunter: The Movie.

Hello fellow dance bloggers!

I'm an amateur competitive ballroom dancer and ballet enthusiast. In my blog, Swan Lake Samba Girl, I mainly journal about my experiences competing and performing as an amateur, detailing (hopefully with a bit of humor!) the trials and tribulations of trying to learn dance as an adult. Even when not competing myself, I attend many ballroom competitions, which I write about in the main blog, and post lots of photos of on my photo page. I'm also a big ballet fan (particularly of American Ballet Theater), so I attend a lot of their performances and blog about them. I hope to promote the worlds of both ballroom and ballet with my blog.

Thank you!
Tonya

I started my blog 8 months ago in an attempt to document my life as a young artist in the city. Being a dancer with ABT is one part of my life but I like using the blog as a tool to explore so much more than company life. I hope that readers get a sense of my struggles and excitments as they follow me around the city (and beyond.) It has really prompted me to be hungry about exploring life and analyzing my experiences. RANTING DETAILS Check it out!

The video dance forum came out of an open symposium event I helped to organise around screen dance practice and discourse. This was then joined up with the delegates of the ADF Screendance conference that Doug Rosenberg set up. The aim of the forum is to connect people who want to talk about screen-based dance in a critical and intelligent manner. It is open to almost anyone to become a contributing member, even though I set it up I can't say really I own it. It's still growing and developing.

If there were eight nights a week.... I'd be dancing on them all.

My blog is about my passion for social dance including ballroom, latin and salsa.

It is also the personal dimension to my business www.dancetours.co.nz where people from all over the world can join us Kiwis (New Zealanders) from Down Under in icon dance destinations for a stunning dance holiday. Buenos Aires in April?

If you are not sure where our village of 4 million people and 40million plus sheep live, head south to Chile, turn right and keep going until you hit New Zealand. If you come across a big red desert with people speaking Australian you've gone too far. Turn back and arrive in NZ where we are passionate about many things, including dance.

Shall we tango?

I started an community-based website for dance called DanceFaces. The site includes forums, blogs, resumes, auditions, dance directory, dance event listings, dance video uploads, and more! I just started to blog. I am writing about many different topics in the world of dance. In fact, coming soon on the site is the Articles page where my friends and I will have featured blogs where we write about our experiences in the professional world and offer advice to dancers.

I began blogging in 2004 as part of my PhD research into choreographic practice for screen, and the blog evolved into a way of keeping track of the work I was making. It brings together stills, quotations and writing on process, and charts the development of over forty pieces of screen based dance work, from initial ideas, to screenings.

My blog chronicles my life as an often reluctant law student by day and an avid dance student by night. I discuss my ballet background, newfound pursuit of ballroom dance, and experiences studying and performing as a member of a bellydance troupe.

Hi, I'm Doug Fox, I write the Great Dance Blog.

Much thanks to everybody who's contributed to this thread about dance blogs.

Great Dance sort of evolves along with my interest in different aspects of dance. But overall, I'd say that the primary focus is on how all participants within the dance community can use the Internet and digital technologies for creative, educational, marketing and promotional purposes.

I'm not sure why I haven't been writing that much lately about the dance classes I take. I take modern and jazz, and I also just started to learn how to swing dance.

I'm also collaborating with Liz Lerman Dance Exchange on the Funny Uncles Blog. The purpose of this blog is to provide multimedia access to the creative process and also to develop a platform that enables visitors to share their own stories -- in spoken and/or movement form -- that are related to the themes of "outsiderness" and non-traditional families that are explored in this work.

I started Root Magazine last spring as a response to the interests of the ethnic dance community. Dancers are curious and passionate about all forms of movement, music and culture.

I created a space for people to go to learn about the origins, cultural impact and communities these dances come from. Every article and photo is written/ taken by someone deeply involved in the art form.

As a dancer and photographer, I sought to create a beautiful and interesting space where dancers can also contribute their opinions in the comments section. Also teachers post their dance classes for FREE on the Community page:

http://rootmag.typepad.com/root_community/

In addition, the Marketplace is building to become a space where people can go to shop for all related items such as costume, shoes, music and travel:

In short, Root Magazine is from the heart!

Follow your heart isn't that what they say? In 2004 I sold everything I owned to move to Buenos Aires Argentina.

My life completely changed. I went from being a high tech wiz to owning a Bed and Breakfast for tango dancers, and teaching both English and tango.

My blog chronicles my life as an Ex-pat and as a tango dancer. People say my blog allows them to live vicariously through me. I just want to share my experiences and hope that it inspires others to follow their heart.

I'm an avid blogger who decided to try going "pro" when an opening came up on B5Media's "Fame or Famine" blog, which is about the performing arts. I've been on both sides of the theatre, as tech and performer, and miss it terribly (I currently pay the bills working in video). Fame or Famine is more of a collecting house for various interesting aspects of performance that I find, wherever I can, and is a personal reflection on the art of performing in general...

Writing about Dance is a total no-sense.
Still we try!
Why?
We remenber there was a time when we just couldn't see theater plays, because of those so heavy- heavy texts, those texts we knew already before they were even said on stage.
On the other side, dancers didn't speak, and they could reach once in a while such moments of pure beauty and ugliness, sparks of divinity.
But it's so easy to forget every night all about it,so we try to write, it's maybe a way, every day, to refuse to die.
A bientôt peut être.

Hi Doug,

Our blog is about networked performance. We cover all disciplines and practices that utilize computing and telecommunications technologies (the Internet, cell phone networks, etc.). Many of the projects on our blog are participatory and/or interactive. You can find dance under the "Networked Dance" category. I also post about dance in "Opportunities + Events + Resources."

Hi Doug,

My blog Dansistan is exactly one year old, and it is a "place" dedicated exclusively to reviews, articles, essays, commentaries, debates, reflections, stories, histories, and possible itineraries on/of contemporary dance and performance art - as well as other related creative forms. It is international in scope, although I am mostly based in Istanbul.

I am a sociology phD student working in sociology of the body and sociology of dance. So, my essays have an academic twist.

I have been a part of the dance world as an organizor, writer, teacher and dancer.
